Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), founded in 1896, is one of the oldest and most respected educational institutions in China, particularly known for its significant contributions in the field of science and technology. A comprehensive research and teaching university, SJTU serves over 35,000 students at its six campus locations. SJTU's centrally-located Xuhui campus is the host campus for UCLA.s Summer Travel Study Program campus which is produced in partnership with SJTU's School of International Education.
SJTU is the official partner university for the UCLA Confucius Institute. Each year visiting faculty from SJTU teach Chinese language to the undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in UCLA's Department of Asian Languages and Cultures' courses. Beginning in 2011 the SJTU faculty offered specialized Mandarin class for UCLA science and technology majors participating in a summer research program at the Joint Research Institute in Science and Engineering by Peking University and UCLA.
In addition to teaching our students, the SJTU faculty and staff provide invaluable help guidance and support for the various Confucius Institute programs and projects that we enage in each year.
Visiting Professor Zhuang Lailai (庄来来) is currently serving as the Associate Director of the UCLA Confucius Institute.
