The UCLA China Arts Fellowship (CAF) is a 6-month post-graduate program beginning in late February 2018* that offers recent UCLA graduates (2015-2017) the chance to live, study, and gain professional experience in Shanghai, one of the world’s most vibrant global arts centers. This highly-selective program responds to the increasing number of collaborative projects developing between creative professionals in China and the US -- from the production of blockbuster movies and live music events to experimental art and theater -- by giving new UCLA graduates the opportunity to acquire valuable work experience and professional connections in their field while learning a critical world language.
Blending classroom instruction and experiential learning, the China Arts Fellowship enables recent UCLA graduates to become part of the creative currents flowing between China and California. CGA Fellows will live and study at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of International Education, located in the heart of Shanghai’s beautiful French Concession. Each week CGA Fellows will have 10 hours of Mandarin language study (beginner to advanced intermediate levels) and spend 16 hours working as interns alongside MOCA Shanghai’s international staff on a wide range of interdisciplinary public and educational programs for MOCA and its partner institutions in China and abroad. The UCLA CAF program will provide an introduction to Chinese language, culture, and art to young arts professionals. This program is not designed for native speakers of Mandarin and those with extensive experience living in China.
The UCLA China Arts Fellowship covers the cost of housing, tuition, medical insurance, offers a modest living stipend, and covers the cost of 2-weeks of travel in China. Participants will be responsible for their international airfare and cost of a Chinese visa.
