This is the first of a series of international symposia on the theme of Chinese Language and Discourse, to be held once every two years in different parts of the world. Presentations will showcase latest advancements in broadly-defined discourse functional studies of the Chinese language.
UCLA hosted three distinguished theater artists from China: Shang Chanrong (Shanghai Beijing Opera Company), Mao Weitao (Hangzhou Yue Opera Company) and Zhou Zhiqiang (Natioal Theater of China). While at UCLA the artists met with leaders in our campus community and shared their expertise with students from our theater and music departments. Their visit to UCLA was made possible by Beauty Media and Ministry of Culture of China.

Over 300 people gathered to hear Yu Dan speak on Confucianism and its role in contemporary Chinese life at UCLA's Fowler Museum. Yu Dan’s visit to UCLA was the last stop on a 5-city US tour that included talks at Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of Washington and Stanford University. The tour was sponsored by The China Press, the 3rd largest Chinese language newspaper in the United States.
China's three-time ping pong champion and a progenitor of the "ping pong diplomacy" (乒乓外交) that helped thaw relations between China and the United during the 1970s. While in Los Angeles, Master Zhuang lectured and gave demonstrations at UCLA, USC, and Santa Monica College.
