UCLA welcomed a group of distinguished artists from Tianjin to campus for a performance of Beijing Drum Song held at the Hammer. While at UCLA the artists, Yang Jiefeng, Wang , Xia Yan, and Zheng Liwen, also gave a workshop for UCLA student musicians and actors.
The program was a partnership program presented with the Hammer Museum, the Center for Chinese Studies, and the Department of Ethnomusiciology. The performance, which took place in the open-air courtyard of the Hammer Museum. A Chinese teahouse-inspired performance space was created to help showcase the art form in its traditional context. While drinking tea, and snacking on oranges, shelled peanuts, and sunflower seeds, the audience had the wonderful opportunity to watch the guest artists enact tales from China's classic novels, Water Margin (水湖专） and Romance of the Three Kingdoms (三国演义). Bilingual supertitles were projected above the stage that enable all audience members to enjoy the dynamic presentation.
