150 Mandarin language teachers from China underwent ten days of intensive language pedagogy training at the 6th annual College Board Guest Teacher Summer Institute. Culled from hundreds of applications, these teachers represent the best and most promising language educators of China. At UCLA, Guest Teacher Summer Institute teachers participated in workshops on classroom management, language pedagogy best practices, incorporating authentic materials in lesson plans, and other crucial language teaching topics, in addition to receiving individual mentorship from master teachers and tips on handling cultural differences and adjusting to life in the United States. For many teachers, this was their first time to leave mainland China, and they enjoyed exploring UCLA's campus, trying California cuisine, and learning more about American culture. The last four days of the institute gave the teachers the opportunity to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to teaching classes of local K-12 students as part of the program's Mandarin Language Student Summer Camp. Through this camp, over 200 Los Angeles area students of all ages and backgrounds benefitted from four full days of free Chinese language and culture classes.
