Yangqin (Chinese dulcimer) Performance by Liu Yuening

Yangqin virtuoso Dr. Liu Yuening, will give a master class and lecture -demonstration UCLA introducing China's hammered dulcimer.  Her presentation will showcase both Chinese yangqin music, as well as other traditions of dulcimer music found world-wide. An award-winning musician, educator, and influential leader in the Chinese music world, Dr. Liu travels globally promoting dulcimer music. She is returning from an Eastern European tour where she worked with the Royal Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen.  Her latest project explores ways to blend Chinese yangqin music with American blues and jazz.

In China, Dr. Liu serves as professor of yangqin performance at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and a supervisor of master of arts students of traditional Chinese music at the school. She has recorded 16 albums in China and overseas, written 10 textbooks and dozens of research papers and essays. In 2008, she founded Jasmine, the first yangqin ensemble in China, which made its debut at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
