The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival (中秋节 zhōng qiū jié) is a traditional celebration of the harvest, family, and togetherness under the light of the autumn full moon. For centuries, Chinese families have gathered together on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month to feast, eat mooncakes (月饼 yuèbĭng) and light festive red round paper lanterns echoing the glow of the full moon. This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls in the middle of the China National Day Golden Week holiday, celebrating the 1949 founding of the People's Republic of China.
