Artist Talk: Huang Rui & the non-conformist STARS movement (1977-1984)

Tuesday, January 24, 2017 - 4:00pm to 6:00pm

The STARS were a Beijing-based avant-garde art collective who famously protested governmental censorship of the arts in the early nineteen-eighties through demonstrations, rogue unlicensed public art exhibitions, and bold experimentation with new art forms and aesthetics. Many members of the collective went on to become internationally-recognized leaders of China’s contemporary art movement, including Ai Weiwei and Wang Keping. STARS founding member Huang Rui will present his early work with the collective and discuss the STARS’ unique foundational role in the development of China’s contemporary art scene.

Huang Rui’s talk precedes an on-site performance of “Ping Pong”, his exploration of the legacy of Chinese-American diplomatic and cultural relations, on Thursday at Art Los Angeles Contemporary. For more information on this performance, please visit the event website.
